When that alert comes up or we see the needle dip below that little red line, we often fill with dread. Where is the nearest petrol station? How many miles do I need to get to my destination? Do I have any form of payment with me?
This can be made much worse if you are in an unfamiliar area, perhaps on holiday or travelling with work as knowing where the nearest fuel station is can be difficult.
Let’s take a moment to think about those living in remote areas where there are very few fuel stations in the area.
We’ve found some fuel stations in remote areas of the UK should you ever need to use them:
Right up in the Highlands of Scotland sits the village of Tongue, which is just about as far North as you can go and still be in the UK. The nearest main town is Wick, which is a good 1hr 30 minutes drive away and if you’re driving South, Inverness is just over 2 hours away.
Tongue is conveniently located on the popular North Coast 500 driving route, which goes from John O’Groats to Ullapool across the Northern coastal area of Scotland.
There’s one petrol and one diesel pump with a card machine attached. There is a small convenience store too if you need to
Address: Tongue Filling Station, Tongue, Lairg, IV27 4XL
Applecross Petrol Station is a community run, self-service fuel station that serves the Highlands of Scotland.
Inverness, which is at the opposite side of the country, is one of the nearest heavily populated areas and is just over 2 hours away by car.
Fort William is a popular visitor area due to the proximity to Ben Nevis, but you’re still looking at a drive that is just over 100 miles (2hr 45m).
Address: Shore Street, Applecross, Strathcarron, IV54 8LN
Lealholm is a small village located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, around 9 miles from the popular seaside town of Whitby.
The North Yorkshire Moors has very few fuel stations once you go further North than Pickering and Kirkbymoorside, so knowing where you can get petrol whilst exploring the vast moorland is comforting.
Address: Lealholm Service Station, Lealholm, Whitby, YO21 2AQ
Kettlewell is popular with walkers due to the vast area of the Yorkshire Dales surrounding the village. There’s a whole host of visitor attractions close by, including Malham Cove, Grimwith Reservoir and of course, the Yorkshire three peaks.
Whilst the area isn’t sparse, it is generally made up of small villages, with very few towns in the vicinity so finding places to refuel can be more difficult.
Address: Kettlewell, Skipton, BD23 5QZ
If you’re visiting the South coast, namely the South Devon area, the environment can be quite sparse in between the coastal cities. If you’ve come from the Dartmoor National Park are, you’ll notice how desolate it is and how few places there are to stop for fuel.
California Cross BP Garage is conveniently located just off the B3196 and has a number of pumps on site. There’s also a Spar shop if you need to purchase snacks on the way.
Address: B3196, California Cross, Ivybridge, PL21 0SG
