A Short History of the Jaguar XF

The Jaguar XF is a remarkable luxury car that has made its mark in the automotive world. With its inception in 2007, the XF has gone through various generations and revisions, further solidifying its reputation as a premium executive vehicle. Let's delve into the history of this iconic British car.

First Generation (2007-2015): The XF Emerges

In 2007, Jaguar introduced the XF as a replacement for the S-Type, with the intention of bringing a fresh, contemporary design language to the brand. Conceived under the guidance of Ian Callum, the car's design director, the XF's sleek, coupe-like silhouette, and modern interior layout marked a departure from traditional Jaguar styling cues. The first-generation XF was offered with a variety of engines, including petrol V6, V8, and a 3.0L V6 diesel.

Second Generation (2015-Present): Evolution and Innovation

The second-generation XF was unveiled in 2015, boasting an even more refined and sophisticated design, with a new aluminium-intensive platform for improved weight reduction and handling dynamics. The car's interior received upgrades in technology, such as the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, and a focus on luxury materials and craftsmanship.

This generation saw the introduction of the Ingenium family of engines, which included both petrol and diesel variants, designed for enhanced efficiency and performance. The XF Sportbrake, an elegant and spacious estate version, was launched in 2017, catering to those looking for additional practicality without compromising on style and performance.

Special Editions and Performance Variants

Throughout its history, the Jaguar XF has seen several special editions and high-performance variants. Notable examples include the XFR (2009-2015) and the XFR-S (2013-2015), which showcased the brand's performance capabilities with their powerful V8 engines and sport-tuned suspensions. In 2018, Jaguar introduced the XF S, a performance-oriented model featuring a 3.0L V6 supercharged petrol engine, and a sporty design that further enhanced its road presence.

The Future of the Jaguar XF

As Jaguar plans to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2025, it's likely that the XF will undergo further evolution to align with the brand's electrification goals. While the details remain uncertain, we can expect future iterations of the Jaguar XF to continue to uphold the legacy of refinement, performance, and innovation that has defined the model since its inception.

*********

The Jaguar XF has been in production since 2008, following its launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007. It was originally launched as the C-XF concept car in January 2007.

The C-XF, which went on to become the XF was powered by a 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, coupled to 6-speed automatic gearbox. It was formally unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. When they went into full production, Jaguar XF cars were launched with a choice of V6 and V8 engines, like its predecessor, the Jaguar S-Type. The XF was notable for its oval mesh grille, which had been a feature of the original XJ back in 1968.

The XF was immediately made available in a variety of models, Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, SV8 and XFR, each offering different levels of performance. The base model had a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, in addition to the 4.2-litre V8, which was used in the concept car. A 2.7-litre diesel was also available as part of the original model range.

2009 saw two major developments in the XF's history, when the 2008 supercharged engine was replaced by a 5.0-litre supercharged engine that boasted 464bhp. The second development came in the form of substantial additional Jaguar XF sales when it was selected for use by UK police forces. A special version of the XF Diesel S was developed, with the first orders being made in 2010.

Anyone hoping to trade in their nearly new Jaguar XF would have been delighted to hear the news in April 2011 when details of a new model was announced, including a new diesel engine and an 8-speed gearbox.

The XF has undoubtedly been one of the best value luxury saloons on the market since its launch. It has won numerous awards, including 'What Car?' magazine's Best Executive Car three years running, between 2008 and 2010.
