Skoda Roomster

Since Skoda first introduced their mould-breaking five-seat mini MPV to the European market in June 2006, the Skoda Roomster has been dividing opinion.

Its unique 'love-it or hate-it' appearance initially prevented some buyers from appreciating its practical modular design, consisting of a spacious front driving cabin and separate 'living room' kitted out with 'Varioflex' adjustable seats, which could also be removed to make way for equipment or furniture. Skoda Roomster cars were also designed to handle like conventional hatchbacks, making them easy to drive.

Despite its 'comedy looks' the BBC's 'Top Gear' gave the 2006 version a good review, saying it was 'extremely clever' and 'well-equipped', as well as being enormously versatile, bridging the gap between the mini-MPV and commercial vehicle markets. A panel van version called the Praktik was briefly introduced in 2007 to some markets, but it had limited success.

More recently, Skoda Roomster sales have been boosted as a result of a style make-over and improved engine efficiency. The 2010 shape features a widened front grille and headlamps shaped to 'optically widen' the bonnet, giving the car more road presence. A 'scout' version was also introduced for those keen on more offroad-style looks.

Both the diesel and petrol versions have continued to come in a choice of three specifications, offering a wide choice of features, including parking sensors (3-series) and adjustable seat height (2-series) as well as a good range of engine sizes.

The new efficient Greenline II engine launched in 2011 combines excellent performance with impressive fuel economy. Additionally, there are efficient extras such as stop-start and energy recovery technology. Second-hand and nearly new Skoda Roomsters also appear to hold their values well, making them an excellent investment.
