The Subaru Legacy first joined the market in 1989. As a luxury car it features four wheel drive, very competent design and a long list of extras as standard on all models. There is a choice of two engines when looking at secondhand Subaru Legacy cars: there is a 2.5 litre petrol model available, with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a 2.0 litre diesel with a six speed manual gearbox. The drive is effortless, with excellent handling and easy, responsive control. The suspension is soft and comfortable, giving more of a relaxed drive than an out and out performance car. The car has good grip and the four wheel drive means that there is excellent traction and handling through corners.
Good visibility in Subaru Legacies has been continued since their introduction, with a very usable dashboard. The latest Legacy is the largest ever, with a spacious interior and many exciting extras. The car at entry level includes an electrically adjustable driver's seat, BluetoothTM, plus an electric sunroof. With the SE trim it also comprises larger alloys, a sportier trim, and the SE nav plus model includes a key-less entry starter system, rear view camera and satellite navigation.
The reliability of the used Subaru Legacy is as good as Subaru's excellent track record for solidity and practicality. The safety of the car has been maintained throughout its history, with six airbags and a stability control system as standard; the car achieved the maximum five stars in EURO crash tests. There are many other safety features, which support the excellent styling and popularity of the car and protect it against crime, including deadlocks, an alarm, etched windows and locking wheel nuts.
